The argument he lays out in Cutting the Fuse: The Explosion of Global Suicide Terrorism and How to Stop It centers on occupations as the primary driver of suicide terrorism.

Hiding in Plain Sight

Congresswoman Jane Harman accurately depicts the threat of radiological weapons and their impact on our national security.  Her research led her to discover the fragility of the U.S.’s surveillance of such weapons and the relatively low cost, an estimated “125 million dollars,” to safeguard the five hundred most vulnerable domestic sites of radiological research. 

Film Screening: Camp Victory, Afghanistan

On September 22, 2010, the Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative hosted Carol Dysinger, director of the documentary “Camp Victory, Afghanistan.” After the film, Peter Bergen sat down with the filmmaker and Lieutenant Colonel Woody Woodring of the United States Army to discuss the feature. Often touching and sometimes amusing, “Camp Victory, Afghanistan” focuses on the growing pains of the Afghan national army.

On September 14, 2010, the New America Foundation hosted Shuja Nawaz and Michael Waltz along with Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative Director Peter Bergen, in a panel that assessed threats emanating from Afghanistan. Foreign Policy Magazine editor Susan Glasser moderated the panel. Each participant offered diverse perspectives, as the Pakistani and American viewpoints were explored in opening statements and discussion.

Hostage Nation

The New America Foundation’s Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative hosted co-authors Karin Hayes and Victoria Bruce on September 7, 2010. They presented a brief overview of their book, Hostage Nation, which focuses on the bloodless rescue of two American contractors and a former Colombian presidential candidate. The following discussion explored the rescue specifically and the US-sponsored drug war generally.

On August 3, 2010, New America Foundation hosted a panel featuring Jacob Shapiro as well as Erin Simpson, Brian Katulis, and Sarah Holewinski on Rules of War: The Impact of Civilian Casualties on Violence in Afghanistan. Brian Fishman, Research Fellow for New America’s Counterterrorism Strategy Initiative moderated the event. Jacob Shapiro, Assistant Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University, presented his research and conclusions on the affects of civilian causalities and violence.
